· Wash your face twice daily with warm water and a deep-cleansing face wash. Don't scrub too much, this can cause skin irritation and increase breakouts. After cleansing, apply a lotion that contains benzoyl peroxide. This is one of the best anti-bacterials around.
· Use non-comedogenic makeup during the day and remove all makeup before going to bed. Leaving it on will only clog your pores.
· Keep fresh scars clean using a skin-friendly anti-bacterial soap.
· Start your scar treatment of choice once the initial skin heals over
· For a body scar, frequently massage it once it heals to encourages scar softening. Keep the scar out of the sun or use regular, oil-free sunblock for up to 2 years to prevent the scar from darkening.
· Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamin C and skin-strengthening minerals like copper and zinc.
· Regular aerobic exercise to increase the amount of oxygen that reaches the wound, which will improve healing.
DON'T...
· Pop zits. This pushes infected material deeper into the skin and can cause more infection and worse scarring.
· Pick scabs off scars - this also causes worse scarring.
· Use peroxide on skin other than to clean a dirty wound. Repeat use prevents healing because the peroxide kills healthy skin cells needed for the healing process.
· Use vitamin E. It causes contact dermatitis in 1 in 3 people and can even worsen the appearance of scars!
· Smoke. Lighting up decreases the amount of oxygen that reaches the tissues.
· Hit the tanning bed. Intense sun exposure will turn fresh scars permanently red or dark.
